Young Writers Contest
Candidates submitted their creative work on this year’s festival theme, RESILIENCE, for a chance to win a cash prize, be published and featured in the #TeenWritersProject Quarterly Lit Zine, and read their story live at the 2022 Dallas Literary Festival.

2nd Place:

Avani Haden (The Hockaday School) for “From Stem to Stern and Back Again (Musings on Shared Resilience)
Honorable Mention:

Submission Criteria:
You must be a resident of Texas, enrolled in high school, and between 14 and 18 years old at the time of submission
Your submission must be your own original work of fiction inspired by the theme
3,000 words maximum word count
You may submit only one story
No entry fee required

Judging Process:
Each step of the judging process is blind—readers and judges won't see any identifying details about you.
Each qualifying submission will be read by a member of our reading panel. Our reading panel will choose the finalists.
Our panel of judges will read the finalists and select the winners.
Winners will be notified by email.

"My color choices were primarily picked subconsciously while listening to the hip-hop genre, which made me feel a sense of success while working on this piece. This feeling of success is a great motivator when I visualize what I listen to."

"The subject is endangered species such as the Quino Checkerspot Butterfly, the Pecos Sunflower, and the American bumblebee. By focusing on endangered species, I combined my passion for environmental sciences and art. The odd proportions and stylized sunflowers depict nature's ability to be bewildering yet nurturing and beautiful."
Dallas College was asked to provide examples of student work for the marketing materials. They selected recent work included in one of their advanced student exhibitions within Dallas College.
