Joaquín Zihuatanejo
Joaquín Zihuatanejo is the proud descendant of immigrant field workers. Joaquín was just named the Inaugural Dallas Poet Laureate and was presented with an honorarium for $20,000 in honor of the good work he has done and will do in his city working with youth poets. He wants you to understand that the second sentence of this bio would not have been possible without the first. His work has been featured in Prairie Schooner, Sonora Review, and Huizache. Joaquín received his MFA from the Institute of American Indian Arts. His work has been featured on NBC, HBO, and NPR. Joaquín's forthcoming book, Occupy Whiteness, a combination of hybrid erasures and micro essays was written to honor Brown people. The rivers we cross. And the crosses we bear. Joaquín has two passions in his life, his partner Aída and poetry, always in that order.
