Karen Thomas
Karen Thomas is an associate dean at the Meadows School of the Arts and a professor of practice in the Division of Journalism. She joined SMU in 2008 and has taught a range of journalism courses, including news reporting and feature writing. She is a former director of the Center for Teaching Excellence.
She has spent more than 25 years in the trenches of daily journalism and has won several writing awards while working as a national correspondent, education writer and a feature writer specializing in narrative writing.
Thomas holds a Master of Fine Arts degree in narrative writing from the University of Georgia, a Master of Science degree in journalism at the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and a Bachelor of Arts degree in Journalism/English at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst.
